Combined Sewer Overflow Program Union Park CSO Control Projects
The big story on Fort Point Channel Improvements
The $40 million Union Park Detention/Treatment Facility, currently under construction, will greatly reduce the impacts of the CSO flow pumped from the flood control facility to the Fort Point Channel. Flow from the existing pump station represents 88% of all untreated CSO discharges to the channel in a typical year. This facility will detain and treat combined wet weather flows from the South End neighborhood of Boston that pass through the existing Union Park Pump Station (operated by the Boston Water & Sewer Commission). It features 2.2 million gallons of underground storage, screening, disinfection and dechlorination facilities. The new Union Park facility will eliminate 20 out of 26 CSO discharge to the Fort Point Channel. 100 % of the remaining flows to Fort Point Channel will be treated at this facility. It will be complete in 2006. Together with the Fort Point Channel CSO project, MWRA is making the largest public improvement investment for the Fort Point Channel. Updated February 10, 2005 |
