What About Stormwater Control?
Rainfall and snow melt flow through City of Boston drains to the Fort Point Channel from a drainage basin covering areas of the Dorchester, Downtown, South Boston, and the South End. This watershed area for the Channel contributes on average about 416 million gallons per year of stormwater inflow. Cities like Boston have permits with the US EPA to manage stormwater water quality through "Best Management Practices" (BMPs). The Boston Water & Sewer Commission (BWSC) has a wide range of BMPs in use across the city to control stormwater quality, including drain maintenance and cleaning, illegal connection identification and prevention, physical controls, and public education.
