The
Charles River: A national model for CSO Control
The MWRA has
achieved significant reductions of CSO-related impacts to the
Charles River with a combination of sewer separation, storage,
treatment and hydraulic relief projects. As a result, much more
flow is now sent to MWRA's new Deer Island Treatment Plant. Upgrades
to Cottage Farm and Prison Point facilities have improved disinfection
of the remaining CSO flows.
Although sewer
separation projects in Boston and Cambridge have increased natural
stormwater flows into the River, municipalities have implemented
Best Management Practices to improve stormwater quality. Sewer
separation and hydraulic relief projects have dramatically reduced
combined sewer overflows.
In its Annual
Report Card, the U.S. EPA has rated the Charles River a "B"
since 1999, up from a "D" in 1995. This means that the
river is acceptable for swimming and boating for most of the year.
And water quality in the river continues to improve.
MWRA will employ
the same combination of sewer separation, storage and treatment
to reduce combined sewer overflows in the Fort Point Channel. |
