The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority is continuing to address the record rainfall that occurred in our service area.

Sewer flows and reservoir elevations remain high throughout the MWRA service area. All MWRA facilities are staffed. The MWRA continues to monitor flows and issues by geographic location.

The MWRA does not have small pumps available to pump out flooded basements. If you experience flooding in your home, call your local fire department.

Wachusett Reservoir
The Wachusett Reservoir has crested and the level is continuing to decrease slowly. Current elevation is 395.73 (down 0.02’ from the last report). There is 1,015 mgd spilling over the spillway. There has been no transfer of water from Quabbin Reservoir to Wachusett Reservoir since February 2010.  

Quabbin Reservoir
The Quabbin Reservoir is at elevation 530.60, with no change since last report.  Spilling at 677 mgd.

Other Western Operations
The Sudbury Reservoir continues to decrease its elevation slowly and is at elevation 259.23, a decrease of 0.02’ as the last report. The reservoir is spilling 72 mgd (spillway crest at 259.0 elevation).

Reservoir # 3 also continues to lower and is at 185.98, a decrease 0.03' since the last report – spilling at 137 mgd, (spillway crest at 185.25).

Metropolitan Boston Sewerage System
All MWRA sewer facilities continue to be operational at this time. The MWRA system is still at or near capacity and just starting to lower slightly.

South System
The Nut Island Headworks/IPS is currently running at about 338 mgd. Deer Island has been able to maintain this flow.

Deer Island
The Deer Island Treatment Plant is processing at a rate of about 890 mgd.

Clinton Treatment Plant
Plant flow at 10.3 MGD, continues to slowly decline.
Nashua River continues to recede slowly from the plant area.

April 2, 2010 –7:30 AM Update

Wachusett Reservoir
The Wachusett Reservoir has crested and the level is continuing to decrease slowly. Current elevation is 395.80 (down 0.13’ from the last report).  There is 1,120 mgd spilling over the spillway (versus 1,350 from the last reading).

There has been no transfer of water from Quabbin Reservoir to Wachusett Reservoir since February 2010.  

Quabbin Reservoir
The Quabbin Reservoir is at elevation 530.61, an increase of 0.01’ since last report (6 PM report).  Spilling at 690 mgd.
 
Other Western Operations
The Sudbury Reservoir continues to decrease its elevation slowly and is at elevation 259.27, a decrease of 0.07’as the last report. The reservoir is spilling 90 mgd (spillway crest at 259.0 elevation). 

Reservoir # 3 also continues to lower and is at 186.08, a decrease 0.15' since the last report – spilling at 116 mgd, (spillway crest at 185.25). 

Metropolitan Boston Sewerage System
All MWRA sewer facilities continue to be operational at this time.  The MWRA system is still at or near capacity and just starting to lower slightly.

South System
The Nut Island Headworks/IPS is currently running at about 345 mgd. Deer Island has been able to maintain this flow.

The Deer Island Treatment Plant is processing at a rate of about 850 mgd.

The Wachusett Reservoir has crested and the level is continuing to decrease very slowly. Current elevation is 395.93 (down 0.04’ from the 6:00 PM reading).  There is 1,350 mgd spilling over the spillway (versus 1,450 from the last reading).
There has been no transfer of water from Quabbin Reservoir to Wachusett Reservoir since February 2010.

The Quabbin Reservoir is at elevation 530.60, an increase of 0.01’ since last report (6 PM report).  Spilling at 670 mgd.

Other Western Operations
The Sudbury Reservoir is at elevation 259.34, a decrease of 0.03’as thelast report, spilling 130 mgd (spillway crest at 259.0 elevation). 

Reservoir # 3 is at 186.23, a decrease 0.06' since the last report– spilling at 210 mgd, (spillway crest at 185.25).

Total rainfall at Chelsea was 5.09”.  All MWRA sewer facilities are operational at this time.  The MWRA system is still at or near capacity.

There has been no transfer of water from Quabbin Reservoir to Wachusett Reservoir since February 2010.

The Quabbin Reservoir is at elevation 530.59, a decrease of 0.01’ since last report.  Spilling at 660 mgd.

Other Western Operations
The Sudbury Reservoir is at elevation 259.37, a decrease of 0.02’as the last report, spilling 145 mgd (spillway crest at 259.0 elevation).  Sudbury has dropped 0.3’ since it crested yesterday.

Reservoir # 3 is at 186.29, a decrease 0.05' since the last report – spilling at 230 mgd, (spillway crest at 185.25).  Res #3 has dropped about 0.5’ since it crested yesterday.

There has been no transfer of water from Quabbin Reservoir to Wachusett Reservoir since February 2010.

The Sudbury Reservoir is at elevation 259.39, a decrease of 0.02’ from last report, spilling 160 mgd (spillway crest at 259.0 elevation).  Sudbury has dropped 0.3’ since it crested yesterday.

Reservoir # 3 is at 186.34, a decrease 0.05' since the last report – spilling at 250 mgd, (spillway crest at 185.25).  Res #3 has dropped about 0.5’ since it crested yesterday.

MWRA expects the spillway to crest late this afternoon/evening.  Based upon rainfall and weather forecasts, the MWRA expects that the volume over the spillway will continue to rise to a level at least similar to the storm of March 13th..

Two major tributaries have crested, although still discharging large volumes. The Wachusett spillway has not yet crested. MWRA expects the spillway to crest late this afternoon/evening.  Based upon rainfall to date and weather forecasts, the MWRA expects that the volume over the spillway will continue to rise to a level at least similar to the storm of March 13th.. There has been no transfer of water from Quabbin Reservoir to Wachusett Reservoir since February 2010.

The Quabbin Reservoir is at 530.5 (adjusted).  Spilling at 560 mgd.

The Quabbin Reservoir is at 530.55 up 0.05' since the last repor.  Spilling at 613 MGD.

Other Western Operations
The Sudbury Reservoir 259.67 up 0.10' since the last repor and rising rapidly, spilling 362 MGD (spillway crest at 259.0 elevation).
Reservoir # 3 is at 186.72 up 0.32' since the last repor and rising steadily – spilling at 305 MGD (spillway crest at 185.25).

Metropolitan Boston Sewerage System
Total rainfall at Chelsea is 5.06. All MWRA sewer facilities are operational at this time. The MWRA system is at or near capacity. High tide has passed.  Next high tide will be at 12:56PM.

South System
The Nut Island Headworks/IPS is currently running at about 373 MGD. Deer Island has been able to maintain this flow based upon rain to date.

30 March 2010 –1815 (10:00 PM) Update:

Wachusett Reservoir
The Wachusett Reservoir level is 395.91. There is 1,310 mgd spilling over the spillway, up almost 558 MGD since the last report.

Tributaries are still rising. Based upon rainfall to date and weather forecasts, the MWRA expects that the volume over the spillway will continue to rise to a level at least similar to the storm of March 13th..

Quabbin Reservoir
The Quabbin Reservoir is at 530.50 up 0.05' since the last report. Spilling at 558 MGD.

Other Western Operations
The Sudbury Reservoir 259.57 up 0.15' since the last report and rising rapidly, spilling 278 MGD (spillway crest at 259.0 elevation).

Reservoir 3 is at 186.40 up 0.25' since the last report and rising steadily; spilling at 270 MGD (spillway crest at 185.25).

Metropolitan Boston Sewerage System
Total rainfall at Chelsea is 4.80. All MWRA sewer facilities are operational at this time. The MWRA system is at or near capacity. High tide will be at 0026 hrs tomorrow and will be 11.39 ft.

South System
The Nut Island Headworks/IPS is currently running at about 374 MGD. Deer Island has been able to maintain this flow based upon rain to date.

The Deer Island Treatment Plant is processing at a rate of about 1,262 MGD.

The Cosgrove rain gage is at 6.69" up about 2.5" since the last report.
The Wachusett Reservoir level is 395.76. There is 1,063 mgd spilling over the spillway, up almost 300 MGD since the last report.

Tributaries are still rising.  Based upon rainfall to date and weather forecasts, the MWRA expects that the volume over the spillway will continue to rise to a level at least similar to the storm of March 13th..

Quabbin Reservoir
The Quabbin Reservoir is at  530.48 up 0.10' since the last report.  Spilling at 535 MGD. The Winsor rain gage is indicating 1.35 inches of rain up 0.06" since the last report.

Other Western Operations
The Sudbury Reservoir 259.42 up 0.26' since the last report and rising rapidly, spilling 176 MGD (spillway crest at 259.0 elevation).

Reservoir 3 is at 186.06 up 0.54' since the last report and rising steadily – spilling at 160 MGD (spillway crest at 185.25).

There is 738 mgd spilling over the spillway, up 56 MGD since the last report. Tributaries are still rising. Based upon weather forecasts, the MWRA expects that the volume over the spillway will continue to rise to a level similar to the storm of March 13th.

Quabbin Reservoir
The Quabbin Reservoir is at 530.45 up 0.05' since the last report. The Winsor rain gage is indicating 1.29 inches of rain up 0.05" since the last report.

Other Western Operations
The Southborough rain gage is indicating 2.27 inches of rain, up 0.35” since the last report. The Sudbury Reservoir 259.16 up 0.07' since the last report and rising rapidly, spilling 7 MGD, up 4 MGD since the last report (spillway crest at 259.0 elevation). Reservoir 3 is at 185.52 up 0.17' since the last report and rising steadily (spillway crest at 185.25)

Tributaries are still rising. Based upon weather forecasts, the MWRA expects that the volume over the spillway will continue to rise to a level similar to the storm of March 13th.

Quabbin Reservoir is at  530.40 up 0.11' since last report.

The Winsor rain gage is indicating 1. 1.24 inches of rain up 0.05" since the last report.

The Southborough rain gage is indicating 1.92 inches of rain.

Based upon weather forecasts, the MWRA expects that the volume over the spillway will continue to rise to a level similar to the storm of March 13th.

Quabbin Reservoir

Quabbin Reservoir is at 530.26 BCB elevation and rising steadily. There is 325 MGD spilling over the full spillway, up 15 MGD from the last report. The Winsor rain gage is indicating 1.16 inches of rain.

Other Western Operations

The Southborough rain gage is indicating 1.92 inches of rain.
The Sudbury Reservoir 259.03 and rising rapidly, spilling 3 MGD. (spillway crest at 259.0 elevation)

Quabbin Reservoir

  • Currently spilling at an elevation of 530.14 @ a rate of 240 million gallons per day.
Wachusett & Sudbury Reservoir
  • Currently spilling at an elevation of 395.28 @ a rate of 420 million gallons per day.  Tributaries are starting to rise rapidly.
  • Clinton Wastewater Treatment Plant flow at 8 million gallons per day.  Nashua River is full but not entering plant.
  • Sudbury Reservoir at an elevation of 258.72 (just below the spillway elevation of 259.0).
Wastewater Service Area
  • Deer Island is processing 1,210 million gallons per day.
  • Nut Island currently processing flows at a rate of about 343 million gallons per day (maximum capacity of about 400 mgd).
  • All north system headworks are choking.  All CSO facilities are activated.

March 29, 2010 – 3:30 pm Update:

  • Currently spilling at a rate of 350 million gallons per day.
  • No flooding reported at the Clinton Wastewater Treatment Plant.

  • Currently spilling at a rate of 220 million gallons per day.

  • Nut Island currently processing flows at a rate of 250 million gallons per day.
  • No releases to harbor are imminent.
  • No issues to report.

Greater Boston /North

  • Deer Island is processing 970 million gallons per day, with maximum capacity of 1.3 billion gallons.
  • The first combined sewer overflow facility has activated: Somerville Marginal
  • No issues to report.
