About this Project:

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) has an ongoing program for the rehabilitation of its sewer system to improve the reliability of service to our customers. As part of this program, the MWRA plans to rehabilitate its Sewer Sections 41, 42, 49, 54 and 65 in the Cities of Malden and Melrose with a cured-in-place-pipe (CIPP) liner system. The CIPP lining work is not anticipated to begin until Spring 2025 and will be completed within a 2-year contract period.

CIPP lining is a trenchless technology where a flexible tube is inserted into the existing sewer through an existing manhole and steam cured to bond to the existing pipe. This lining system will provide a new joint less sewer pipe that minimizes root and water infiltration problems, improves flow, and provides for a more structurally sound pipe without the need for excavation. Failure to rehabilitate the pipe could lead to pipe failures causing much larger loss of service and interruptions in the future.

The sewers in this project area total approximately 26,800-ft in length. The sewers include Section 42 (~3,050 LF) and Section 49 (~3,900 LF), which connect to Section 41 (~10,800 LF) at the intersection of West Wyoming Avenue and Pleasant Street in Melrose. Section 65 (~4,500 LF) connects to Section 54 (~4,530 LF) at the intersection of Eastern Avenue and Bryant Street in Malden. Section 54 connects to the downstream end of Section 41 at the intersection of Middlesex Street and Charles Street in Malden.
