MODELED DILUTION PATTERNS OF TREATMENT PLANT DISCHARGES
INTO BOSTON HARBOR

MWRA primary and secondary treated effluent
In this computer model, yellow and red areas represent less dilution, green and blue are more diluted. Effluent from Deer Island Treatment Plant was swept northeast, with some discharge returning on the incoming tide. In the sourthern harbor, effluent was not as well diluted (Signell, 1992 USGS).
