Nutrients such as nitrogen are necessary for the growth of plants, but excess nutrients can accelerate the growth of algae or aquatic weeds. In marine waters the limiting nutrient is nitrogen, so that adding nitrogen increases algae. Ammonium is the main form of nitrogen in MWRA effluent.
