The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority
monitors water quality at
more than 50 locations in Boston Harbor (including Quincy, Hingham, and Dorchester Bays) and in the Charles,Mystic,
and Neponset rivers. Sampling helps to evaluate the impacts of system improvements, urban runoff, and combined
sewer overflows (CSOs). Measurements include temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, water
clarity, nutrients, suspended solids, fecal indicator bacteria and algae. Recent data is collected and outlined in the Boston

HARBOR AND RIVER WATER QUALITY INFORMATION
In contrast with most of Boston Harbor, the rivers frequently
do not meet the Massachusetts state water quality standard of average
fecal coliform counts of less than 200 colonies per 100 ml. This is due to the
impacts of CSOs and urban storm runoff. Below are links to water quality pages.
