2003 Report on your Drinking Water - a message from your local water department
CITY OF SOMERVILLE

Public Water Supply # 3274000
One of the City of Somerville’s highest priorities is to provide safe drinking water to all its consumers. The MWRA supplies and treats the water distributed to our community and is responsible for the quality of water dispersed into the City’s pipes. The City of Somerville has its own annual program to upgrade selected pipes, valves, hydrants, and service lines. This program targets water mains whose rehabilitation or replacement will benefit the City distribution system by increasing the flow through these pipes. During the coming year, the City will be developing a five-year capital improvement program, prioritizing the streets to be done each year.
In the year 2003, the City installed new mains in the following thirteen (13) streets:
On a daily basis our water crews are constantly on the look out for water system leaks, flushing pipelines to keep the water as clean as possible, and replacing faulty meters and recording devices, where necessary, to provide more accurate billing for our customers. In addition the water division replaces fire hydrants, to insure they are in good working condition, collects weekly water quality lab samples, and conducts biannual leak detection surveys in order to save money on the amount of water purchased from the MWRA. The cross connection control program inspects, tests, and approves installation of backflow prevention devices, whose function is to prevent contaminants getting into the potable drinking water system.
