PFAS in Fertilizer Pellets

You may have seen news reports about PFAS (polyfluoroalkyl substances) in MWRA’s fertilizer pellets, which are marketed under the names New England Fertilizer and Bay State Fertilizer.

These PFAS compounds are persistent in the environment and have been used for decades in a number of everyday products from Teflon pans to microwave popcorn bags to waterproof fabrics.

It is important to note that wastewater is tested every step of the treatment process and MWRA consistently meets the standards of a stringent EPA permit. MWRA is in full compliance of all current federal and state standards for this fertilizer.

MWRA has been tracking this issue and continues to participate in national studies. We will follow the science and work to meet any future regulatory requirements.
