Public Meeting Set on MWRA Sewer Project In West Roxbury

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority will hold a public meeting on Monday, December 6, 2004 to provide updated construction plans for a critical relief project on a 100 year old sewer line in West Roxbury. The project, called the Upper Neponset Valley Relief Sewer Project, is centered along the VFW Parkway, Wayne Road in Newton, St. Joseph’s Cemetery, and several side streets.

The public meeting will be held at Area E-5 West Roxbury police station at 7:00 P.M.

The $27 million sewer project will provide relief to the overtaxed sewer system that overflows in wet weather. The proposed plan calls for 2.3 miles of new sewer lines running under VFW Parkway in West Roxbury from Corey Street to Claire Motors. Additional work in West Roxbury will take place on LaGrange, Gardner and Baker Streets, and in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

MWRA is working with the Department of Conservation & Recreation to protect the environmental integrity of the VFW Parkway, especially the 550 trees along either side of the parkway and in the grassed median. Construction along the parkway is proposed during nighttime hours to prevent large daytime traffic tie-ups along this busy thoroughfare. Trenchless construction methods will be used at two major intersections along the route. MWRA will require the construction contractor to use best available technology to control noise and vibration levels.

Additional information on the project can be obtained from Jeffrey McLaughlin at MWRA (617)-788-1170. MWRA urges residents along the route to attend this important public hearing.
