Quincy Resident Recognized For Work With MWRA Apprenticeship Program

The MWRA Board of Directors last week presented Jack Sullivan of Quincy, a plumber/pipefitter at MWRA’s Deer Island Treatment Plant, with the "1998 MWRA Employee Recognition Award for Excellence in Performance." Sullivan was recognized by his co-workers, who nominated and elected him for the award, for his contributions to MWRA’s Apprenticeship Program.

Sullivan, an MWRA employee since 1993, serves as chairman of MWRA’s Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee.

The Apprenticeship Program was created in 1993 to create a stronger future for both the Deer Island Wastewater Treatment Plant and its workers. The Program features on-the-job training as well as classroom work. Fourteen workers at MWRA have earned new credentials and upgraded skills as a result of the program and Jack Sullivan’s contributions.

"Jack Sullivan is one of the most dedicated people I’ve met," said MWRA Executive Director Douglas B. MacDonald. "Jack has been a strong proponent of the Apprenticeship Program at Deer Island from the beginning. The program has improved through his participation and interest."

When a suitable technical physics course (required for apprentices) could not be found at a local school, Sullivan designed and implemented a course at Deer Island to satisfy the apprentice training requirement. He and six other journey level Deer Island employees taught the course.

"Jack is the kind of MWRA employee that ratepayers should be proud of," MacDonald said. "Apprentice training is good for our workers and good for our facilities too. Everybody wins, including Jack, whom we congratulate on his receiving this well deserved accolade from his co-workers.
